Recife is my hometown, but Olinda is my home. I graduated in Architecture at the Federal University of Pernambuco, but after falling in love with children’s literature, I closed my architecture office and devoted myself to the illustration.
In 1994 I published my first book, Som coração. Since then, I sought pretexts to roam between images and words. Since 1997, I have been working on picture books, where I am author of both images and text. Specially, the Palavra Rimada com Imagem collection, which won several National Foundation for Children and Youth Books awards, Azoreans Prize and the Jabuti prize.
Many are the paths I trail from the origin of the book until the time the originals are done. There are countless possibilities that the creative process introduces. Even a memory, a reflection, a fact, a movie or another book can give me an Ariadne thread. The result is a spectrum of techniques and a book with a unique identity.
I also work as a reading tutor and, in partnership with Anabella Lopez, we have created the Usina de Imagens, a school on illustrators training.
